How Does a Dehumidifier Work?

Too much moisture and humidity indoors can cause feelings of discomfort and may even trigger some allergies and health problems. It can also result in mold growth and a musty odor, which cannot be completely remedied by air fresheners. To avoid or at least minimise these issues, it may be a good idea to invest in a high-quality dehumidifier to effectively eliminate moisture from the air. But before you start browsing humidifiers online, you might want to learn more about them and how they work, so you can choose the right product that is best for your situation!

What it does?

Think of the dehumidifier as somewhat similar to a vacuum cleaner, but this time, it sucks in the air from the room through one end, removes the moisture from it, and then returns it back into the room again, but this time, the air is cooler and drier. Moisture is gathered and dripped into a collection tank, which should be emptied occasionally.

High-quality dehumidifiers should reduce moisture in the air to a relative humidity of 30 to 50 percent. Most of them have a built-in meter to measure the relative humidity of the room, and that can be set to your desired percentage.

Some precautions

Not every space may benefit from a dehumidifier. For example, if you live in a place where the climate is dry (e.g., high-altitude areas or a desert), or if you rely on electricity or gas for heating, then it may not be the best. If you or anyone in your household has pneumonia or skin conditions like eczema, the condition might worsen when the air becomes too dry. The same goes if you have a stuffy nose or a dry cough.

Do you need one?

A dehumidifier is more practical in places where damp air is likely to accumulate, such as basements. It may also be a necessity in places that have a persistent damp smell or muggy air, or if you are allergic to dust mites and mold.

You can also buy it from any electronics retailer in UAE or your nearest National Store.
